Jewellery Care Guide

All our jewellery is skilfully crafted to maximise comfort and style but all jewellery benefits from being kept clean whilst being handled and worn with care.
We've taken a look at our jewellery and separated them by product, metal and gemstone to give you some tips and tricks to keep it in tip top condition.

Jewellery Care by Product

Earrings

We suggest storing your earrings in their jewellery box or pouch to keep them safe and secure. Where possible, store them separately to avoid surface scratching if the earrings rub together.

Ensure the butterfly back fixtures feel snug when fastening. Avoid wearing your earrings if the butterflies feel loose. We can tighten these at any time for you.

For click hoops, you should hear a click sound to demonstrate they are closed properly.

Clasps can loosen over time due to daily wear, however this is normal and we can easily fix this for you.

Be mindful of your hair and surrounding attire to keep all earrings in shape over time. Wear your scarves, large collars and heavy knitwear with care to ensure your earrings are kept safe.

Necklaces

Keep your necklaces and pendants in tip top condition by closing the clasp when you’re storing them to avoid tangling in their jewellery box/pouch.

Be careful not to pull on delicate chains as this can cause damage.

Pendants with stones can be cleaned in warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush to remove dirt.

Wristwear

Keep your bracelets in tip top condition by closing the clasp when you’re storing them to avoid tangling in their jewellery box/pouch.

Be careful not to pull on delicate chains as this can cause damage and ensure clasps are firmly closed when putting on your jewellery.

Your wristwear can be cleaned in warm soapy water with a soft toothbrush to remove dirt.

Rings

All our rings are suitable for daily wear but do avoid any friction on hard surfaces or by accidental knocks as this can damage any gemstones and wear down the metal.

Please ensure you remove your rings before any strenuous activity such as exercising, housework or heavy lifting.

Treat your jewellery with love and care by cleaning in warm soapy water and using a soft toothbrush to remove any dirt from gemstones.

With day to day wear, there can be surface scratches on the metal, see our metal care guide below about the appropriate care for specific metals.

Engagements rings should where possible be stacked with bands of the same alloy. Worn daily over many years these ring will benefit from being paired with an matching alloy to minimise wear.

If a stone has loosened, please get in contact with us at customercare@dinnyhall.co.uk, or visit your local store so we can assess.

Jewellery Care by Metal

Silver & 22k Gold Vermeil

Silver is marked 925, meaning 92.5% silver, and 7.5% other alloys.
Vermeil is a minimum of 2.5 microns of real gold electroplated over 925 Silver.

Our sterling silver and vermeil are strong and durable metals that can be worn daily with no need to keep removing your items. They can both naturally scratch over time but won't appear dull. If your items are kept in your jewellery boxes for a longer period of time it’s natural for tarnish to appear. This can easily be removed with a soft polishing cloth or silver dip. These metals are hypoallergenic and don't contain nickel.

If wearing a vermeil ring stacked together with another vermeil, silver or solid gold ring this can wear the plating faster due to them rubbing against each other.

If you experience any tarnishing with your silver or vermeil jewellery, you can bring it into store / send it to us for a clean or you can follow our home remedy below:

Step 1 - Lightly scrunch some tin foil into a bowl.
Step 2 - Sift some baking powder over the tin foil.
Step 3 - Put your tarnished jewellery on top the foil.
Step 4 - Pour boiling water into the bowl and wait 2-3 minutes, the chemical reaction will remove the tarnish from your jewellery.
Step 5 - Carefully remove your jewellery from the bowl and rinse it under cold water before rubbing with a clean, dry cloth.

9K Gold

Our 9k gold is made of 41.7% pure recycled gold and 58.3% silver, copper and zinc, which means it is a higher gold content than standard 9k and is effectively 10k.

This particular gold alloy can only be hallmarked in the UK as 9 karat gold so we are only permitted to officially say it is 9k. The Assay Office has stringent hallmarking laws to protect the consumer from being sold under par gold or silver and sadly 10k gold is only recognised in the USA and overseas.

The beautiful and subtle pale gold colour of this recycled gold is due to its high silver content, which means that it could potentially tarnish if left unworn for long periods.

Our 9k is a strong metal so we often advise not stacking your 9K ring(s) directly against silver or plated jewellery to avoid scratching but 9k can be stacked with 14k and 18k. Most surface scratching will be superficial and could be polished to a high shine from time to time.

To clean your jewellery, use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush, for removal of any tarnishing, a quick immersion in silver dip should make it look as good as new.

14K Gold

14k Yellow Gold is hallmarked 585 which is 58.5% gold and 41.5% silver, copper and zinc. 14k white gold is the same percentage of gold but with 41.5% silver, copper, zinc and palladium.

14k gold is a strong metal that will stand the test of time, however, we recommend against stacking your jewellery against against silver or plated jewellery to avoid scratching but 14k can be stacked with 9k, 14k and 18k.

Most surface scratching will be superficial and could be polished to a high shine from time to time. Any scratching is small and not clearly visible to the naked eye.

To clean your jewellery, use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush.

18K Gold

18k yellow gold is hallmarked 750 and consists of 75% pure gold, and 25% silver and copper.
18k white gold is 75% pure gold and 25% silver, copper and palladium.

18k gold is the finest metal we offer at Dinny Hall and is suitable for daily wear. As the surface is a little softer than our other metals, we recommend you avoid stacking your 18k rings directly against silver or plated jewellery to avoid scratching but 18k can be stacked with 9k, 14k and 18k.

Most surface scratching will be superficial and could be polished to a high shine from time to time. Any scratching is small and not clearly visible to the naked eye. To clean your jewellery, use warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush.

Engagements rings should where possible be stacked with bands of the same alloy. Worn daily over many years these ring will benefit from being paired with an matching alloy to minimise wear.

Platinum

Platinium is hallmarked 950 and consists of 95% fine platinum and 5% alloy metals.

Platinum is the strongest and most durable of all the metals we offer. Over a long period of wear, the surface may dull down with daily wear and tear and require a re-polishing to restore its shine. Get in touch with us about our polishing service if your platinum jewellery needs a refresh.

Jewellery Care by Gemstone

Diamond

To keep your diamonds sparkling avoid applying creams and perfumes after putting on your jewels to avoid them getting under settings. Diamonds are one of the strongest substances found on earth, feel free to wear them daily, sleep in them, or stack them. There's not a lot that can harm these beauties.

To clean your diamonds at home you can place your jewellery into a small dish filled with warm soapy water and leave to soak. Using a soft bristle toothbrush, you can give your jewellery a gentle brush to loosen and remove any dirt before rinsing in cold clean water.

If a stone has loosened, please get in contact with us at customercare@dinnyhall.co.uk, or visit your local store so we can assess.

Emerald

Emeralds are a softer stone and therefore need extra care and attention. Any knocks to the stone can cause it to chip or scratch so treat your emerald like the special stone they are. We advise removing your pieces whilst doing strenuous activities, showering, swimming and applying creams and perfumes.

To clean your emeralds at home you can do with mild soapy water and a soft cloth. Do not soak emeralds as this can remove the natural oils that are present in the stone.

If a stone has loosened, please get in contact with us at customercare@dinnyhall.co.uk, or visit your local store so we can assess.

Moonstones & Opals

We use stunning genuine Ethiopian opals but they really don’t like getting wet. To keep the beautiful 3-dimensional colouring of your opals we advise avoiding contact with water, moisturizers, and other types of liquids.

We also advise keeping your opals out of direct sunlight for long periods of time. Sunlight can cause some opals to discolour.

Both moonstones and opals are soft stones and need extra care and attention. We advise removing your pieces whilst doing strenuous activities, showering, swimming and applying creams. Any knocks to the stone can cause it to chip or scratch so treat your gemstones and opals like the special stone they are.

Pearls

To keep the pearlescent shine we advise you avoid getting your pearls wet - so no showering, swimming or exercising in them. Apply any creams or perfumes before putting on your pearls.

For rings and bracelets don't do any strenuous activities and store your pearls away from your other jewellery and gemstones to avoid scratching or denting the pearls. They love to be worn; the natural oils present in our skin will benefit their beautiful lustre.

Sapphire

Like diamonds, sapphires are one of the strongest stones. You can wear them daily, stack them and sleep in them.

To clean your sapphires at home you can place your jewellery into a small dish filled with warm soapy water and leave to soak. Using a soft bristle toothbrush, you can give your jewellery a gentle brush to loosen and remove any dirt before rinsing in cold clean water.

If a stone has loosened, please get in contact with us at customercare@dinnyhall.co.uk, or visit your local store so we can assess.
